Because the sable color is definitely in the works at ASC right now, I just wanted to tell more about the experience I had with breeding the color.
I bought "Kingspoint Mahogany Man" in 1978 from Marilyn James of Oklahoma. She bought him from Linda Orr. His breeder was Connie Reed. I had seen him at the first summer National Specialty in Oklahoma City.
When I got him he had already sired 3 litters. Two of his sable/white offspring were:

I assumed that it was going to be easy to breed lovely, typey dogs from my own bitches that had good breed type.

In 1980, cockers were still only a few generations removed from the long faced, flat headed, thin coated cocker of the 50's.

When I outcrossed my girls who were linebred to Mahogany Man..I got long faced, bigger, thinner coated dogs.I had dogs with heavy shoulders, round rumps, plain heads and high hips.

I HAD a big challenge to breed a show dog.

I thought that one POINT that might be GOOD to know is that "Kingspoint Mahogany Man was the first solid sable cocker shown at a NATIONAL ASC specialty in 1977 when he was a little over 6 months old

Kingspoint Mahogany Man" was registered as MAHOGANY .In 1977 people were not SURE what color this was. They knew it wasn't RED....To set it apart from buffs and reds it was called Mahogany for a while.

If you reverse research his pedigree on http://www.cockers-worldwide.com/ you can go forward generations and generations and see how MANY hundreds of AKC champions decend from him today.

The original argument was that he came from pet stock and was from inaccurate records by pet breeders. It was also
suggested and explained by ASC members that the color came from a cocker/beagle cross.
I think that just looking at all the revered cockers that descend from him (a solid sable) would be MORE than enough to stay..it's time.

We are basically ALL breeders with the goal to produce outstanding cocker spaniels that fit the standard of this breed.

PLEASE inform yourself by researching his pedigree and see how few offspring he actually had and how many bred on to GREAT things in our breed ring.
